Evidence of corrosion has actually been found on an iPhone as little as 4 hours after it was dropped into salt water, so time is particularly of the essence when salt water is involved.

Why is salt water so much worse?

As with any metal or electronic system, contact with water is bad. If the surface does not have a protective coating, then the salt can start to eat away at the electrics due to the breakdown of oxygen which then combines with the iron in the salt. The result is a very aggressive corrosive impact which can destroy circuits on the main board, making the phone unable to be repaired.
